Every so often it pays to stop and ask a deceptively simple question: what did all of that time, work and attention actually deliver? And at this time of year especially — have I harvested the benefits?
Think of how obvious this is elsewhere. An investor who never takes their returns doesn’t have gains — they have numbers on a screen that can vanish overnight. The same is true of a hard-won lesson you never quite draw out, so you can clarify and apply it. And what of the relationship you stop investing in, which quietly withers? In every case the value was real — and it slips away the moment you stop paying attention to it.
In Ian’s words: “Growing something is only half the work. The other half is harvesting it.”
For most of us not everything we’ve done has blossomed the way we hoped. A real harvest means separating what worked from what didn’t — and taking the learning from each. Do this right and nothing is wasted: the wins give you their fruit, and the disappointments give you their lessons.
This session is a chance to gather in what you’ve been growing, sort it with an honest eye, and carry the best of it with you into whatever comes next.
It’s easy to keep growing without ever pausing to gather anything in. The next project starts before the last one’s been properly understood. The next goal replaces the last one before its lessons have been drawn out.
This session is about the alternative: stopping deliberately, sorting what worked from what didn’t with an honest eye, and carrying the best of it forward, rather than leaving the value of a whole season sitting ungathered.
